The Kentucky Horse Park is planning an annual world class legacy event as a follow up to the 2010 World Equestrian Games. Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry and The Knight Foundation are looking to build a legacy project that will not only be a point of interest during the 2010 World Equestrian Games, but continue after the event is over similar to the Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, Georgia.
What a great idea! Would it be possible to build a legacy project in Georgetown or Scott County? Lexington is seeking ideas from the community. Why don’t we do the same? Borrowing from the Lexington project, the criteria for Georgetown could be as follows:
- Be inclusive for all citizens
- Be completed and doable by 2010 and be sustainable beyond 2010
- Further enhance Georgetown’s brand
- Build upon the environment of the cultural creativity
- Serve as a catalyst for other future projects
- Be financially feasible
Look around and think about what might be done to add to our already great quality of life. What common space could be utilized or enhanced? Is it possible to connect disparate common spaces to create a connected natural flowing environment? Think how the arts, culture, environment, and community could be woven into such a project.
Do you have any ideas? The World Equestrian Games is giving our community a wonderful opportunity. Let’s not waste it.
